Petroglyph Provincial Park – south of Nanaimo
Petroglyph Provincial Park was established in 1948 to protect the petroglyphs that were created over 1,000 years ago by First Nations peoples.
The traditional carvings in the sandstone bluffs depict everything from mystical wolf-like creatures to fish and human figures. The carvings were made for a variety of reasons, including territorial ownership and to commemorate special events among a people with no written language.
Unfortunately, Petroglyph Provincial Park is a favorite spot for vandals that deface the history of Vancouver Island.
