Chooch in Port Alberni
Before dozer boats existed, log drivers had the dangerous task of walking the logs on the water, sorting them with a pike pole and stacking them at the log lift. Dozer boats largely eliminate the need to walk on logs by pushing the logs into place.
I’ve always called them dozer boats, but these little tugs are also referred to as sidewinders, log broncs, boom boats and pond boats. In British Columbia, boom boat was coined by John Manly Ltd. in 1947 when they built the welded steel Glendale Prince for BC Forest Products.
