The statue of Major General Calixto García, hero of the Wars of Independence in Cuba in the 19th century, has changed its location. From its location on G street (Avenida de los Presidentes) in the Vedado neighborhood, on the Havana boardwalk, where it remained for more than 55 years, it has been transferred to 5th. Miramar Avenue, exactly at 146 street.
The passage of Hurricane Irma through the capital in 2017 caused serious damage to the pavement, lighting fixtures and ironwork of the monumental complex, not to mention that due to continued exposure to saltpeter, the sculptural work presented high levels of oxidation. Faced with such a scenario, it was decided to relocate it, to guarantee its better conservation.
