The 90-metre tall white surge towers are in place to prevent the penstocks from bursting during periods of low production when the flow gates are closed. They will be replaced with a 110 metre deep surge shaft and a single surge tank that will be mostly underground as part of the John Hart replacement project.

When you get past the campground outside of Cumberland, you start to get a sense of the history of Comox Lake, and the importance of forestry (logging) in the Comox Valley…

Cumberland, Bevan, and the surrounding areas were once the site of one of BC’s biggest coal mining operations, with 8 different mineshafts in operation. By 1950, the only mine left operating was No. 8, and in 1953, No. 8 closed marking the end of coal mining in the Comox Valley
