Once there was a marine railway

ships,marina,Campbell River,ship yard, marine railway,history

The remains of two marine railways are just beyond the steel walkway – it hinges open to allow boats to travel up and into the ship yard, and then again back down into the water.

The rails and most of their supports are gone, as are the ship yards.

A bit of a mess

_DSC0084_filt

Oil and water should never mix…

The Government Wharf in Campbell River is a great place to look at fishing boats and tug boats, and the nearby Discovery Fishing Pier offers some great views of cruise ships, tugs and barges, ferries and fishing boats transiting Discovery Passage.

It’s also become a place where you witness the environmental mess that boat owners cause when they allow their vessels to become abandoned hazards…

Farquharson Farms–the vanishing trees

Pacific Estuary Conservation Program,Ducks Unlimited,Farquharson Farms

December 2013

In 1998, the vast expanse of farmland on Comox Road—formerly called Farquharson Farms—was jointly purchased by Ducks Unlimited and other partners in the Pacific Estuary Conservation Program (PECP).

Designated as a wildlife refuge in perpetuity, the 192-acre Comox Bay Farn is a productive farm in spring and summer, and a winter refuge for Trumpeter and Mute swans.

The PECP is a coalition of seven governmental agencies and three non-governmental conservation organizations, whose goal is to secure estuary habitat through acquisition, creation of nature reserves, and stewardship of privately-owned land. The PECP partners include … Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the British Columbia Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Wildlife Habitat Canada, the Nature Trust of British Columbia and the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund

The Cherry trees are slowly disappearing, being cut down and removed – you can see the stumps to the left of the road.

Courtenay Air Park, looking across the Comox Estuary

Winter, and it’s not raining so I headed out to spend some quality time outdoors with a camera or two, and my other half, who also had a camera. All in all, shooting video is a great way to spend part of the afternoon, especially when there is a lot going on in the scene.
