Walton Lighthouse

The Walton Lighthouse stands as a testament to the rich maritime history of Nova Scotia. Erected in 1873, this 9.4-meter-tall beacon once served as a guiding light for vessels navigating the treacherous waters of the Minas Basin and the upper Bay of Fundy. Its bright light signaled safe passage to the once bustling Walton Harbour, a hub of commercial activity during the mid-20th century.

As the shipping industry evolved and the harbor’s activity waned, the lighthouse faced obsolescence and potential destruction. Yet, through the concerted efforts of the community and the provisions of the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act, the Walton Lighthouse was preserved. The Municipality of East Hants’ acquisition of the lighthouse in 1991 marked the beginning of a new chapter in its history. The subsequent heritage designations at both municipal and provincial levels not only recognized the lighthouse’s historical significance but also ensured its survival for future generations to appreciate.

Today, the Walton Lighthouse serves as a cultural landmark, embodying the spirit of an era when maritime trade shaped the economic landscape of the region.
