Captain Cook – Government Street

A grey spring day at Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park

I’m assuming that this is part of the Nanaimo assembly wharf – the magical place where train cars, containers and other bits and piece such as logs and bundles of lumber are assembled in one spot to be loaded onto a barge or a freighter.
This particular section is between the marine railway terminal (the old Black Ball and then CP Marine terminal) and the new cruise ship terminal.

You can get nice views of the marinas in Nanaimo from the Millstone Trail, adjacent to Maffeo Sutton Park.

But sometimes you need to look at the big picture…

The highway bridge over the Millstream (Millstone) River just north of Nanaimo was named after Canada’s 14th Prime Minister Lester B. “Mike” Pearson.

Dungeness Crab statue in Maffeo Sutton Park
The 3.9 meter by 3.0 meter crab was carved from a single red cedar tree, using a chain saw and power tools. After being coated with fiberglass, it was sanded to bring out its color and highlight its details.
