Sayward – Cable Cafe

The Cable Cafe is a steel frame building bolted to a cement base. There are approximately 26 tons, or 8,200 feet of wire rope welded to the channel iron frame of the structure.

The walls are covered with used logging cable, mostly 2″ “skyline” right hand lay, with a strip of left hand lay cable around the center. Sandblasting removed the the rust from the cable and it was then coated with Polylite, a plastic covering.

The gable ends are constructed of 1 3/8″ and 1 1/2″ cable. The exterior gable ends were left in their original rusty condition and coated with a clear acrylic. The inside gables were painted with a mixture of bronze powder and varnish.

Sayward – the sunken ship

Sayward,ships,marina,sunken ship

Unlike the ships that were purposely sunk to create one of the breakwaters protecting Kelsey Bay at Sayward, this ship sank in the marina by accident of some sort.

Originally built as the Malaspina Voyageur, this unlucky tug was destroyed in a fire, and was rebuilt in 1959 . She went on to sink at dock in Fraser River December 2008, written off by insurance company, and rebuilt as the Lady Jodi.
