Garry oaks (Quercus garryana) on the hill at Beacon Hill Park

In 1843, Hudson’s Bay Company officers lined up two beacons on Mount Beacon to mark Brotchie Ledge. The western most beacon had a blue triangle and the other a green square. If a sailor could see the square through the triangle he was on Brotchie Ledge- which meant trouble.

Beacon Hill Park was named for the two beacons.
