CN 1274 at the Middleton Railway Museum

CN 1274 is a 75-ton 4-6-0 steam locomotive that was built in Montreal in 1905. The locomotive is unique in that it is equipped with a Belpaire type firebox typically found on locomotives of the Pennsylvania Railroad. According to Nova Scotia Railway Heritage Society Chair Bill Linley, there is no other locomotive like it in Canada.

The locomotive was first owned by the Canadian Northern Railway and numbered 213.

  • 1920: renumbered as 1274
  • 1923: became part of CNR and was placed in class H6G
  • 1957: issued number 1521 in September of 1957
  • 1961: sold to Andrew MacLean in the year 1961
  • 1965: moved to the Ontario Science Centre
  • 1969:  sold to a private owner in Michigan
  • 1989: moved to Upper Clements, Nova Scotia
  • 2020: moved to Middleton, Nova Scotia
