Commonly known known as horse-chestnut or conker tree, Aesculus hippocastanum is a common sight across Vancouver Island, especially in the fall when the prickly seed pods begin to fall into piles on the ground.

The seeds contain alkaloid saponins and glucosides, and are slightly poisonous, although not dangerous to touch. When eaten by horses, they can cause tremors and lack of coordination
