Constructed in 1961, the Horton Bluff Lighthouse has an 8.7-meter-high tower rising from the west corner of the flat-roofed building sited sixty-five meters above Avon River.
The light served as the front light of a pair of range lights. The companion rear range light was shown from a skeleton tower located 539 meters upriver.
The Horton Bluff Lighthouse and the rear range were deactivated on July 12, 2013, after commercial shipping on the Avon River ended with the closure of the Hantsport gypsum quarry and ship loading facility in 2011.
