Port George Lighthouse

The 7.6 meters high Port George Lighthouse was built in 1889 when the Port George pier was constructed. The lighthouse was originally positioned at the outer end of the town’s eastern pier and was relocated to the roadside in the early 1930s when the pier became unstable.

The fixed fed light light was originally lit by kerosene. At dusk the lighthouse keeper cleaned the shade, trimmed the wick and lit the lamp. In the morning he would return to  extingish the light.

The kerosene was brought by a large boat which anchored offshore on the Bay of Fundy and lowered a smaller boat to bring in several 45 gallon drums of kerosene that were stored in the lighthouse for future use.
