A duck out of water

Campbell River,Highway 19,North Island,winter,dozer boat,boom boat,ships,boat moving

Obviously, it’s a dozer boat out of the water and it’s heading down the road but a duck out of water sounded better than dozer boat on a trailer.

I could have used a title involving heading down a road less traveled as this is the road from Loveland Bay on John Hart Lake.

Anyhow – it’s an unusual sight and a chance to see how large dozer boats are below the water line.

The mysterious dome

Campbell River,Highway 19,North Island,winter,Quinsam Coal Terminal,buildings,and know you know

The mysterious dome…

You may have noticed this large dome-shaped structure if you drive Highway 19 north of Campbell River – I have, and I was really curious as to what it is used for.

After a bit of research, I learned that the dome is located at the Middle Point Coal Loading Terminal. The facility was built to handle coal from the Quinsam Coal mine. The monolithic concrete dome was constructed using inflatable forms supported by air pressure while shotcrete was installed over post-tensioned cables.

The Quinsam Coal mine shut down in 2016, bringing to an end coal mining on Vancouver Island, and the end of loading coal at the Middle Point Coal Loading Terminal.

and know you know…
