Oyster shells – Fanny Bay

It’s not just oyster shells on the beach, in some places it’s decades of accumulated oyster shells that form the land that we walk on.

Looking north toward the government wharf in Fanny Bay

A well loved boat house – Fanny Bay

I had driven past this boat house many times without stopping as I figured it would probably be very difficult to get close enough to it to get a good picture.
Wrong – it was actually very easy to get to and well worth spending a few minutes walking along the beach.

Unit 24 undergoing annual certification testing
Union Bay Fire Rescue Unit 24 is a 1990 Ford C8000 / Anderson pumper. Although there is a lot of life left in this truck, this is the last year that Unit 24 can be certified as it will be 25 years old – the oldest that a fire engine can be certified and underwritten for fire protection service.

The certification requires a Fire Underwriters Survey test or an NFPA 1911 compliant “In‐Service” test. An NFPA 1911 compliant “In‐Service” test consists of 20 minutes on volume and 10 minutes on pressure. A Fire Underwriters Survey test will consist of 1 hour on volume and 30 minutes on pressure.

Besides needing a new fire truck, Union Bay also needs a modern fire hall that is up to current specifications, and can fit new, larger fire trucks.
And now you know…

Lawrenceville at CFMETR

YTL 590, CFAV Lawrenceville is one of five Ville class tugboats operated by the Royal Canadian Navy. The Ville class tugs are quite low-slung vessels which makes them ideal for harbour work, such as the tight manoeuvring and delicate nudging required to ease a Victoria class submarine into berth.
Ville class propulsion is via a steerable Kort nozzle, a ducted prop with tight clearance (which is meant to increase bollard pull 10% over a conventional prop). A Kort nozzle’s advantage diminishes at speeds over 10 knots
