The Alberni Project is a program of remembrance which pays tribute to the men who served on HMCS Alberni, a Canadian Corvette, between 1941 and 1944.

The Alberni was a Flower Class Corvette, all of which were were named after cities in Canada. K103, the Alberni, was named for Alberni B.C. (now known as Port Alberni) on Vancouver Island, which was named after Captain Don Pedro Alberni who commanded the Spanish Soldiers sent to occupy Nootka in 1790.

Alberni was built at the Yarrows Ltd. shipyard in Esquimalt, British Columbia, was commissioned on February 4, 1941 and arrived at Halifax on April 13. After serving on the Atlantic convoys off Normandy, she sunk on August 21 1944 after being torpedoed by U-480 OLtzS Hans-Joachim Förster CO, at 1141, 25 miles SE of St. Catherine’s Point, Isle of Wight.

The Alberni Project is located in Comox Center Mall, 190 Port Augusta Street, Comox BC
Hours 10 AM to 4 PM, Tuesday to Saturday. Open Sunday and Monday by appointment for groups of 10 or more.

I rarely photograph people, so when I do there’s usually a very good reason – as in the case of Comox Valley military historian Roberta Melville.

I had the pleasure of viewing some of Roberta’s extensive collection of Army equipment and historical items, and spending a few minutes talking with Roberta. If you have a chance to see Roberta and her collection, take it…

Located on the north side of Denman Island, Fillongley Provincial Park is a beautiful place to bask in the sun on a hot day or just sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean. There are ten ocean front campsites in the park.

Looking toward Hornby Island

The land that is now Fillongley Provincial Park was bequeathed to the province of British Columbia by George Beadnell, an Englishman who settled here at the turn of the century. Remains of the old homestead can still be seen if you hike about the park.

Looking across Baynes Sound from Denam Island toward Buckley Bay

The Buckley Bay terminal as it is – and at some point as it was, as construction is underway for the new cable ferry terminal facilities.

And some wake from the MV Quinitsa – I like looking at such things as they are beautiful, chaotic, ever changing and always turbulent yet gentle at times.
