In the early 1950’s the Marine Rescue Section at CFB Comox was established  to support 409 Fighter Squadron, with three  steel hulled 40′ crash boats manned by RCAF motorboat crewmen.  The section was on the water for all over water flying exercises, airborne emergencies, bomb range patrol and target towing. The sec tion was also on standby for any marine emergency involving non military aircraft and ships.

In the mid 1970’s the Marine Section was taken over by naval personnel posted to CFBComox. In November 1985, Black Duck and Albatross were delivered to CFB Comox, replacing the old steel vessels. In the early 1990’s the Marine Section changed from operational to a training role.

Orca-class Patrol Craft Training vessels

The Orca class vessels are primarily used to facilitate the two-to-six-week long at sea phases of naval officer training. They are also used to train non-commissioned members and provide an at sea experience for members of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. They are also frequently tasked for search and rescue operations, assistance to boaters in distress, conducting coastal surveillance and port security operations.

ORCA class vessels are not commissioned warships, and  use the prefix PCT (Patrol Craft Training) instead of HMCS.

Browns River – Power line hike

Piercy Road,Browns River,hiking,Puntledge River

The hike to the Browns River along the BC Hydro power line right of way off of Piercy Road  is fairly short, but it does have a few steep sections near to the river.

Piercy Road,Browns River,hiking,Puntledge River,BC Hydro

The power line trail leads to the north bank of the river, downstream and to the east of Browns River Falls. When the water level is low you can easily hike  along the river bed upstream to the falls, or downstream to the confluence of the Puntledge – you’ll want to carry footwear suitable for wading through water for some sections.

If you watch for it there is also a side trail that leads to Browns River Falls – it’s to the right, about 150 metres from the parking lot on Piercy Road.

Not the trail to the Browns

Duncan Bay Main Line,Forbidden Plateau,Puntledge River,Browns River Falls,Comox Valley,Island Images

I was driving down Duncan Bay Main Line looking for the “new” trail to Browns River Falls when I spotted a likely place to try – as it turned out I did not find the falls but I suspect that I turned back just a bit too soon and was very close to the Browns River actually very close to the falls.

This section of Duncan Bay Main Line can be accessed off of Forbidden Plateau Road, and heads toward the Puntledge River and Stotan Falls.
