Big Qualicum Hatchery

_DSC0041

There are a good number of active and closed salmonid hatcheries on Vancouver Island. The closed ones are sad, and the one’s that remain may be threatened by budget cutbacks. On this day I stopped at the Big Qualicum Hatchery as it is one of the best to see the life cycle of salmon, and the efforts to ensure their survival.

Bridge over troubled waters…

IMG_0515_DxO

I’m undecided if driving over the Bailey Bridge between Bush Island and Jenkins Island is scarier than trying to navigate the narrow passage of Crooked Channel and heading to Mad Island.

Bishop Creek

Its just a rock, and its just some dried seaweed, but there is great beauty to be found if you take the time to stumble across it.

Nova Scotia Textiles Limited – a window into the past

Nova Scotia Textiles Limited, where Windsor Wear was woven…

Pretty much all of the windows have been smashed or removed at the old Nova Scotia Textiles Limited factory in Windsor. There are great plans to renovate the building, but I suspect that it’s eventual use will be as used bricks.

Horton Bluff Lighthouse

20200217_131453

Constructed in 1961, the Horton Bluff Lighthouse has an 8.7-meter-high tower rising from the west corner of the flat-roofed building sited sixty-five meters above Avon River.

The light  served as the front light of a pair of range lights. The companion rear range light was shown from a skeleton tower located 539 meters upriver.

The Horton Bluff Lighthouse and the rear range were deactivated on July 12, 2013, after commercial shipping on the Avon River ended with the closure of the Hantsport gypsum quarry and ship loading facility in 2011.
