Air Force Beach – December storm

Another December storm – Air Force Beach

Yet another storm hits Vancouver Island – this one with gale to storm force winds forming some confused seas and good sized waves.

Wind and ocean spray make for some challenging conditions for still and video work – add in some driving rain and it becomes miserable, but still fun in a way that those who love storm watching understand…

On the grid

Comox Marina,fish boat,ships,marina,Comox Harbour,tide grid

A fish boat on one of the three grids at the Comox Marina

While many wish they could live ‘off the grid’, the owner of this fish boat wanted to be on the grid, so he could change the propeller on his boat.

The grid is nothing more than a series of heavy timbers that are as close to level as possible, and situated so they are exposed at low tide. At high tide, you float your boat into position over the grid, and secure the boat to the dock to prevent the boat from tipping over as the tide goes out and the boat settles onto it’s keel.

No hydraulics, no electricity, no cranes – just the power of the tide at work.

The boat that no longer floats

Goose Spit,HMCS Quadra,sunken boat,wrecked boats

Three boats that no longer float, after sinking or being tossed ashore at Goose Spit, near HMCS Quadra. While this section of the Comox Harbour is relatively sheltered, the bottom is mostly mud and not a great place to anchor a boat during a storm.

The Root Cellar – Filberg Park

The Filberg Lodge and nine acres of beautifully landscaped grounds are located on the harbour near the end of Comox Avenue. The estate was originally built for R.J. Filberg in 1929, and became a public facility after his death in 1977.

The Salmon Dock

Comox Marina – end of November

I often see signs advertising “Tuna at Salmon Dock” so I am going to refer to this section of the Comox Marina as the Salmon Dock.
