The end of the road – the wharf in Kelsey Bay

Sayward,Kesley Bay,wharf

This is one of the most beautiful spots on Vancouver Island, with amazing views of Johnstone Strait, Hardwicke Island and Helmcken Island, While the area is facing struggles due to the economy of the forest industry, Kelsey Bay and Sayward persists and are great stops by road, by sea, or by float plane.

BC Ferries – Kelsey Bay

BC Ferries,Sayward,Kelsey Bay,and now you know

If you travel up Highway 19 to Sayward, and then drive down to Kelsey Bay, you can see, and touch a very interesting piece of coastal history.

BC Ferries,Sayward,Kelsey Bay,and now you know

I stopped to explore and touch what was at one time the BC Ferries terminal in Kelsey Bay.

1966 saw the launch of BC Ferries’ Inside Passage service, with sailings on Route 10 between Kelsey Bay and Prince Rupert. When the Island Highway was extended to Port Hardy, BC Ferries built a new ferry terminal in Bear Cove, and in 1985 shifted the Inside Passage trip to run between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert.

And now you know…

Logging equipment

Logging equipment,trucks

Shut down lumber mills and surplus logging equipment are fairly common sights on Vancouver Island. While the equipment ages and is superseded by modern equipment, the mills are usually gone for good.

Royston

A bit of time well spent, enjoying a spring low tide on the beach at Royston.

There’s a lot of history in this area, mostly involving coal, logging and fisheries – while some of what we have done in the past totally ignored the environmental impact, it is the history of Vancouver Island and there is much to be learned from it.

Royston – little crabs

Royston,Baynes Sound,Salish Sea,beach,crabs,nature,ocean,marine life,video

Low tide at the beach in Royston – you can relax, dig for clams, mess about with a camera or two or go looking for some little crabs.

Sometimes we visit the crabs in the water, and sometimes when they are on the land – it takes a bit of exploring to find them but it is worth it to watch these little guys…

Royston – walking in the water

A warm spring evening and I’m enjoying the beach at Royston at low tide – with a camera of course, and wearing my crocs so it’s time for a bit of messing about in the water.
