The big machine

I had seen this big logging machine on the way into Northwest Bay and was going to stop but was excited about heading to Rhododendron Lake and decided to stop on the way back into Nanoose. That’s not my usual way of doing things as life on many occasions has proven that carpe diem is the way to go if you don’t want to miss out on the good stuff. I also believe in caveat emptor, but that’s another story – for now, the important thing is that I cheated fate and the cool logging machine was still there on the way out.

This machine grabs trees, cuts them off at the stump and then stacks them – it’s amazing.

Looking at something this cool is awesome, and I usually have a total hands off policy as this is the property of someone else, but in this case I figured it would be okay to to hold my foot over the cutting blade to put the size of the teeth in perspective. Huge…

Confederation Fountain

A very cold night at the Confederation Fountain on Menzies Street, across from the British Columbia Parliament Buildings in Victoria, BC.

Ice… –5° Celsius and winds from the northeast at 40. That’s a nasty wind chill.

The wall behind the coat of arms is also a fountain of sorts- the water falls fairly rapidly but smoothly so ice did not form.

Centennial Fountain

A little gem located just off Superior Street behind the British Colombia Parliament Buildings, near the inner harbour in Victoria, B.C.

I was wondering why this fountain was not coated with ice as it was a bitterly cold night for Victoria, and the fountain on the front lawn of the legislative gardens and the Confederation Garden across the road on Menzies were coated with ice – as was the grass and concrete around them.

The fountain is perhaps better enjoyed in warmer weather but what the heck – I was there and it was beautiful, and I pretty much had it all to mine to explore.

Hoar frost

I was pretty sure that this this fallen branch of a tree was covered in Hoar Frost, but being the inquisitive type that I am, I did a bit of checking. Yup – Hoar Frost.

Hoar Frost,nature,ice,winter,and know you know,k12, k - 12

Hoar Frost – Fanny Bay

Hoar frost (or radiation frost) is white ice crystals, loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects. The frost forms on cold clear nights when heat is lost into the open sky causing objects to become colder than the surrounding air.

Hoar frost can develop in several forms.

  • Air hoar is a deposit of frost on objects above the surface, such as tree branches, plant stems, or wires.
  • Surface hoar is fernlike ice crystals directly deposited on snow, ice or already frozen surfaces.
  • Crevasse hoar is crystals formed in glacial crevasses where water vapour accumulates under calm weather conditions.
  • Depth hoar is cup shaped, faceted crystals formed beneath the surface of dry snow.

And now you know…

Sand Dollars

I remember sand dollars being all over the beach when I was young, so I was a bit saddened to only see a few when I visited Rathrevor Provincial Park in the late summer. It was much the same at Miracle Beach,  and I did not see a single sand dollar at Kai Bay or Air Force Beach.

And then I walked a bit further along the beach and spotted a few dead sand dollars and a large amount of live sand dollars. A bit further along and there are a lot of sand dollars burrowed into the sand.

A lot of them…

Sand dollars have a rigid skeleton (known as a test) consisting of calcium carbonate plates arranged in radial pattern. In live sand dollars the test is covered by a skin of velvet-textured spines that are covered with very small hairs (cilia). Coordinated movements of the spines enable sand dollars to move across the seabed.

As with other echinoids, the endoskeleton of sand dollars have a radial symmetry with a  recognizable petal-like pattern consisting of five paired rows of pores.

Dead sand dollars are missing  the spines and are bleached white by sunlight. White sand dollars are dead, black sand dollars are alive and should be left where they are.
