The E&N rail line is widely know as connecting Courtenay and Victoria, but there’s also the Port Alberni Sub, a 39 mile long branch line that runs from Parksville, over the Alberni Summit, to Port Alberni.

Loon Lake is near the Alberni Summit, and it’s worth the short drive along a logging road, and then a five minute hike to visit.

Although the rail line is still classified as an active line, the chances of encountering a train or a speeder are pretty slim. That being said, the RCMP can issue you a $125 fine for trespassing and if there was a train on the line you might not hear it.

The train don’t run here anymore, but it’s best to stay off the track…
