Horse Chestnuts

Commonly known known as horse-chestnut or conker tree, Aesculus hippocastanum is a common sight across Vancouver Island, especially in the fall when the prickly seed pods begin to fall into piles on the ground.

The seeds contain alkaloid saponins and glucosides, and are slightly poisonous, although not dangerous to touch. When eaten by horses, they can cause tremors and lack of coordination

Located antique row at 1061 Fort Street in Victoria’s Victoria’s Harris Green neighbourhood, the Mosaic building was designed by architect John Di Castri in 1963 as the Royal Trust Building. The building features 7000 square foot murals created by artist Andres Salgo.

Frank James Ney (May 12, 1918 – November 24, 1992) was the mayor of Nanaimo for twenty-one years, and served one term as a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. As mayor, he had a habit of attending civic events dressed like a pirate.
