Logging truck

A nice logging truck on Highway 18

The E&N Highway 18 crossing – just as quiet as the spur a few hundred feet up the line. The Lake Cowichan Subdivision once ran 18.6 miles into the Lake Cowichan area and it was extensively used to haul out logs, until the easy to get at standing timber was all gone.

Now it’s all truck hauling relatively short distances to log sorts.

Cumberland No. 4 Coal Mine

No.4 Mine – Cumberland near Whytes Bay on Comox Lake

coal,Comox Lake,rail,history,mining,Cumberland

There’s not much left to see of the No. 4 mine, which is a shame but understandable as the main access to the mine was by a drift tunnel and it has long since been covered and grown over. What remains is an interesting glimpse into what was once a profitable, but deadly, coal mine – 105 men lost their lives in the mine between 1888 and 1935.

On the trail to Whytes Bay

An exposed section of rail from the Wellington Colliery Railway that connected to the No. 4 Mine near Whytes Bay, and further to the north on a trestle over Comox Lake to the Scott’s Slope portal.

The railway ran through Cumberland, Royston, and then on to the coal washing plant and loading pier in Union Bay.
